Seebox for Tertiary Engineering Education
When designing the Seebox we took the instruments that an electronic engineer uses every day and turned it into a powerful education tool for tertiary education institutions to use in the training of the electronic engineers of the future. It has many unique features that will make life easier for the electronics lecturer, like automated examinations etc.
Ecosystem of Educational Videos
Seebox is so much more than just a game console! It combines 6 electronic test instruments in one: an oscilloscope, spectrum analyser, waveform generator, logic analyser, digital pattern generator and programmable power supply, all built into the Seebox.
Seebox is a professional test instrument which is accompanied by a whole ecosystem of educational material. Its aim is to empower educational institutions to prepare their students for a career in technology. This includes animated videos and experimental pc boards on which students perform practical experiments and tests.
The animated videos use familiar concepts like water flow to explain different concepts in electronics in an easily understandable way. Immediately after watching a video students can apply their newly acquired knowledge on a pc board, thus gaining real understanding by experimentation. The educational videos can also serve to refresh a student’s memory when preparing for exams.
Seebox also helps to free up much needed time for lecturers who can spend their time much better by helping students with other challenging problems instead of repeating the same information over and over again to everybody. Students can keep progressing at their own pace whilst the lecturer could be busy helping another student.
Learner ID System and Lock Mechanism
We came up with a unique lock mechanism for Seebox so it can be securely locked to desks in practical labs. This means the lab can be left unattended and unsupervised throughout the day and night.
We invented and patented a unique student identification system, called a Learner ID, which makes it possible to record a student’s activity whilst using the Seebox. The Learner Management System compiles an accurate and reliable record of the electronic concepts the student mastered, the educational videos watched and the total number of hours spent on practical learning. This Learner ID data could assist a student in getting a job or when applying for a bursary.
Seebox Add-on Modules
Seebox was designed to be fully expandable and upgradeable. It uses add-on hardware modules that turn it into a number of other electronic instruments like a Multimeter or a LCR meter.
Importantly, these add-ons only cost a fraction of the price of the equivalent separate instrument and use the same familiar user interface of the Seebox.
Furthermore, science add-ons will turn the Seebox into a science measuring and data-collection device as well in the future. With the Seebox, science students can do fun assignments that measure and correlate data from diverse physical phenomena.
For example, a student can do an assignment where wind speed and solar radiation is measured for a period of time to determine whether it will be more cost-effective to build a wind turbine or a solar power station.
Seebox for Android
Seebox was designed with the ability to use smartphones, tablets or PC’s as a user interface and data processing platform. This means practical labs don’t have to be equipped with computers any more. Students can bring their own tablets or smartphones and connect them to the Seebox. Seebox replaces a myriad of other test instruments with one application that can perform all the tasks necessary.
The range of experimental pc boards that connects to the Seebox are called Playboards and are designed to enable students to easily construct simple circuits that each demonstrates a basic electronic concept. All the Add on Playboards are specifically very affordable, ensuring the Seebox remain one of the most economically viable educational products on the market today.
Seebox and Practical Exams
Seebox is accompanied by software that allows a lecturer to quickly and easily create practical exams to test students’ understanding of a new concept or test their general problem-solving abilities. Since Seebox does the grading of the tests as well it alleviates a lot of pressure on the lecturer when conducting practical exams.
